Prevention, Preparedness and Response to Natural and Man-made Disasters in the Eastern Partnership Countries

EU-funded Flagship Initiative increasing disaster risk management capacities in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.

In order to make journalists who are working with the EU Delegations’ in Partner Countries to better understand the specifics and complexity of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Disaster Risk Management (DRM), and how to inform about them, the PPRD East 2 Programme organised Regional Workshop for Journalists and Communication Experts. The aim of the Workshop, which was held on 1 and 2 November 2016 in Kyiv, Ukraine, is sharing concrete and successful EU experiences on awareness raising activities during disaster risk prevention, preparedness and response phases, and ways how the media and national civil protection authorities should effectively interact with each other during those phases. Involving both the journalists (media) and the national communication experts will also provide a unique opportunity for networking and enhancing collaboration between media professionals and communication specialists of the national civil protection authorities, including sharing best practices in all sectors.

Additionally, the workshop involved the journalists in design of some of the national PPRD East 2 Partner Countries’ communication activities, including: the analysis and definition of the role of CP authorities and media in national communication schemes, the role and mandate of the media in DRR and DRM in the context of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the identification of lessons learnt from passed emergencies (e.g. the Georgian floods June 2015), etc.
