Prevention, Preparedness and Response to Natural and Man-made Disasters in the Eastern Partnership Countries

EU-funded Flagship Initiative increasing disaster risk management capacities in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine.

When disaster strikes, can journalists make a difference? Mass media have a role to play in all phases of Disaster Risk Management: they can shape public opinion, they can influence Government decisions. They can also be key players in introducing the culture of prevention and safety. Public awareness is the cornerstone of any strategy aiming at disaster risk reduction. To explore the role and influence of media – particularly in the context of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction – on 15-16 December 2015 a 2-day International Conference was organized by the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situations of Republic of Armenia and the Emergency Channel Information Centre.

Beside exploring the role of media, the Conference aimed at publicizing Disaster Risk Reduction World Strategies, the Hyogo Framework for Action (2005-2015) and the Sendai Framework for Action (2015-2030).

Many representatives of World News Agencies, public or private news outlets, journalistic and educational organizations as well as Universities attended the Conference. The PPRD East 2 Programme also participated, as it has done at the previous two Conferences in 2013 and 2014.
